Wearable sensor room
For my Sonic Arts MA, a fellow student and I fitted a room with sensors and gave five people ESP32 pendants, so their movement drove generated sound and visuals. I wrote the synths and sensor triggers; the visuals were my fellow student's.
What it is
Source: my answers in the career interviews, 23 Oct and 1 Nov 2026 (who wrote which part)
A room that turned the movement of the people inside it into sound and visuals. A fellow student and I built it during my Sonic Arts MA at İTÜ MİAM. We fitted the room with light, proximity and microphone sensors, and five people wore ESP32 pendants. As they moved, the sensor signals changed the parameters that generated the sound and the visuals.
What happened
We split the work. I wrote the synths and the sensor triggers in SuperCollider and Max/MSP. The visuals were my fellow student's work, made in TouchDesigner.
The room was one of several audio-visual installations from the MA, which I studied from 2021 until I paused my studies to run a startup. Little of it survives: there is no video of the room, and I no longer have the TouchDesigner project files. What is left is the description above and who made which part, so this sheet carries a drawing of how the parts connected instead of footage.
The sound wall has a small version of this idea: your cursor or finger is the sensor. move to play on the sound wall →
